WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, LCV President Gene Karpinski issued the following statement regarding President-elect Obama’s appointment of Senator Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State.  As a United States Senator, Clinton cosponsored the strongest global warming bill introduced to the Senate to date.

“Global warming is an international problem and America must lead the world to international solutions.  As Secretary of State, Senator Clinton’s international experience and long commitment to fighting global warming will be extremely valuable to President Obama’s efforts to protect America and the world from the effects of global warming.  LCV congratulates Senator Clinton and hopes to continue to work with her to face down the challenge of global warming.”

In 2007, Senator Clinton said:

"I will reassert American leadership on global warming in the international arena and press for global commitments to emissions reductions that can prevent the most dire impacts from occurring. I will do so by taking full advantage of the on-going international negotiation process, augmented by focused discussions with major trading partners, including the G- 8, China and India.”
