Washington, D.C. – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund today called on former Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick to return the $15,000 his campaigns have received from the leadership PAC of Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX), ranking member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, who yesterday outrageously apologized to BP, the oil company behind the oil disaster in the Gulf.*
“Former Congressman Fitzpatrick, if you agree with Barton’s sentiments, keep the money,” LCV Action Fund Senior Vice President for Political Affairs Tony Massaro said in a letter to Fitzpatrick. “If, on other hand, you believe that BP – and not the U.S. taxpayer – should be responsible for the compensation and cleanup costs as a result of the explosion at BP’s Deepwater Horizon rig, you should return the money immediately.”
Yesterday, during a hearing with BP CEO Tony Hayward, Rep. Barton said he was sorry that the White House was coming down so hard on the oil giant. He was “ashamed” of their treatment of BP and called it a “tragedy of first proportion that a private corporation can be subjected to what I would characterize as a shakedown — in this case a $20 billion shakedown.” Rep. Barton was referring to the fund BP has established to compensate families in the Gulf for the economic devastation they face as a result of their lack of preparation to handle a leak of this magnitude.
