CHICAGO, IL - The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect candidates who will implement sound environmental policies, today announced its endorsement of Alexi Giannoulias for U.S. Senate.

“LCV Action Fund is proud to endorse Alexi Giannoulias for U.S. Senate because he understands that instead of spending billions on foreign oil, we should be investing in clean, secure energy sources right here in America,” said Tony Massaro, LCV Action Fund Senior Vice President for Political Affairs. “As someone with a background in finance that has focused on the bottom line, Alexi knows that the policies needed to make America more energy independent and reduce harmful carbon pollution are the same policies that will put Illinoisans back to work in a new clean energy economy.”

Alexi supports a comprehensive approach to energy – including limits on carbon pollution – that will create the necessary stability in the market for clean energy industries to invest in their businesses and create new jobs. Illinois is home to more than 2,500 companies that have created more than 28,000 clean energy jobs, like building wind turbines and weatherizing homes*. As a Senator, Alexi is committed to providing incentives that further job creation and economic growth in the clean energy sector in Illinois and across the U.S.

“I thank LCV for this endorsement and pledge to be a consistent and strong voice for meaningful efforts to reduce pollution and protect open spaces, clean air and clean water for our children," Giannoulias said. "I see environmental protection as not only a moral imperative, but an economic imperative as well. When we address global warming, we are spurring the industries of tomorrow, creating good jobs that can’t be outsourced, and restoring America’s place as the innovation leader."

As State Treasurer, Alexi founded Green Rewards, the largest state-backed rebate program for fuel-efficient hybrid vehicles in the nation.  He also founded Green Energy, a program offering low-interest loans to businesses, non-profit organizations and local governments in Illinois that have committed to going green.

In February of 2004, LCV endorsed then-State Senator Barack Obama in the competitive Democratic primary for U.S. Senate.
