Washington, DC - The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect candidates who will implement sound environmental policies, today announced its endorsement of Debbie Halvorson (IL-11) for re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives. Rep. Halvorson received an outstanding 93% score on LCV’s 2009 National Environmental Scorecard.*
“Congresswoman Halvorson has been an important leader in ensuring that America leads the 21st century’s clean energy economy,” said LCV President Gene Karpinski. “We are proud to endorse Representative Halvorson for re-election because she is fighting for policies that will not only build a clean energy economy that puts the people of Illinois back to work, but will also reduce our dependence on foreign oil and curb harmful global warming pollution.”
Rep. Halvorson’s support was crucial to the passage of the American Clean Energy and Security Act in the House, which would help create nearly 70,000 clean energy jobs in Illinois.** She also supported the single largest investment in clean energy in history: more than $80 billion for energy efficiency, renewable energy and public transit in the economic recovery package, with substantial investments going to job-creating clean energy and energy efficiency projects in Illinois’ 11th district. Furthermore, Rep. Halvorson is a co-sponsor of H.R. 890, the American Renewable Energy Act, which calls for 25% of the total amount of energy produced nationally to be derived from renewable energy sources.***
"Voters in our district have a choice; they can create jobs by building solar panels, wind turbines and growing the next generation of Illinois energy here in America, or we can let those jobs go overseas," said Debbie Halvorson. "I am proud to accept the endorsement of the League of Conservation Voters and to fight alongside them to ensure that we create good paying clean energy jobs for working men and women in Illinois."
Rep. Halvorson provides leadership for a number of key environmental committees and coalitions. She is co-chair of the New Democrat Caucus Energy Task Force, where she advocated for clean energy provisions to be included in the American Clean Energy and Security Act. Additionally, Rep. Halvorson is a member of the Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition.
