WASHINGTON, DC - The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect candidates who will implement sound environmental policies, today announced its endorsement of Gary Peters (MI-09) for re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives.
“In just one term in office, Congressman Peters has been a strong champion of legislation that will bring thousands of clean energy jobs to Michigan and reduce our dangerous dependence on foreign oil,” said LCV President Gene Karpinski. “We are proud to endorse Congressman Peters for re-election because he has fought to make Michigan a leader in building the clean energy economy we need to keep America’s competitive edge.”
Rep. Peters voted for the House-passed American Clean Energy and Security Act that would help create over 53,000 clean energy jobs in Michigan*, reduce carbon pollution and increase energy independence. He also supported the single largest investment in clean energy in history – more than $80 billion for energy efficiency, renewable energy and public transit in the economic recovery package, with substantial investments going to Michigan’s 9th district.
As a freshman, Rep. Peters sponsored and helped pass the Advanced Vehicle Technology Act of 2009, legislation which will spur the production of new and more efficient vehicles built in Michigan and throughout the U.S. He also authored an amendment to steer new solar investments to high unemployment states like Michigan.
“During his first term, Congressman Peters fought to ensure that Michigan did its part to transition the U.S. into a clean energy economy while creating clean energy jobs and spurring renewable industries within the state,” said Kerry Duggan, Deputy Director of the Michigan League of Conservation Voters. “When it comes to protecting the planet and renewing Michigan’s economy, Gary Peters is delivering and we look forward to his continued leadership.”
Rep. Peters is also featured on LCV Action Fund’s GiveGreen website, http://lcv.org/givegreen, the only bundling website devoted exclusively to raising money for environmental champions and candidates.
