Washington, DC - The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect candidates who will implement sound environmental policies, today announced its endorsement of Steve Cohen (TN-09) for re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives. Rep. Cohen received a perfect 100% score on LCV’s 2009 National Environmental Scorecard and has a lifetime LCV score of 98%.*
“Steve Cohen has been an invaluable leader in championing clean energy jobs and protecting our natural treasures,” said LCV President Gene Karpinski. “We are proud to endorse Congressman Cohen for re-election because his record proves he knows that the policies needed to grow Tennessee’s economy and keep America’s competitive edge are the same policies that will reduce our dependence on foreign oil and curb harmful carbon pollution.”
Rep. Cohen voted for the House-passed American Clean Energy and Security Act that would help create over 39,000 new clean energy jobs in Tennessee**, reduce carbon pollution and increase energy independence. He also supported the single largest investment in clean energy in history – more than $80 billion for energy efficiency, renewable energy and public transit in the economic recovery package, with substantial investments going to Tennessee to create clean energy jobs and more energy efficient buildings.
“I am honored to receive the endorsement from the League of Conservation Voters Action Fund,” said Congressman Steve Cohen. Throughout my career in public service, I have been a strong proponent of efforts to lower energy costs, invest in renewable energy resources, promote energy independence and create a stronger more secure economy. And I will continue to be an advocate for clean energy and our environment when I return for the 112th session of the United States Congress.”
Rep. Cohen has also co-sponsored the Clean Water Protection Act and expresses opposition to efforts that would undermine the Clean Air Act or allow risky offshore drilling.**** He currently serves on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, where he has supported energy-efficiency mass transit projects.
"Congressman Cohen's long history of strong environmental protection dates well back in time to his leadership on conservation issues in the Tennessee Senate. We expected nothing less than a stellar environmental voting record in the US House of Representatives---and he has more than delivered," said Chris Ford, executive director of Tennessee Conservation Voters. "The voters of the Ninth District have one of Tennessee's strongest advocates fighting for their health, economic and environmental justice concerns."
Rep. Cohen is also featured on LCVAF’s GiveGreen website, http://lcv.org/givegreen, the only bundling website devoted exclusively to raising money for environmental champions and candidates.
