WASHINGTON, DC - League of Conservation Voters President Gene Karpinski issued this statement regarding House passage of the Energy Independence and Security Act:
“We applaud the House of Representatives — and especially Speaker Pelosi’s leadership —
for passing the Energy Independence and Security Act, which will help meet our security, economic and energy needs while protecting public health and the environment. This historic vote shows that elections have consequences -- and in this case that is good for jobs, good for the economy, good for our security and good for the planet.

H.R. 6 increases fuel efficiency for automobiles to 35 miles per gallon by 2020, requires that 15% of our electricity come from clean, renewable energy by 2020, includes important energy efficiency provisions, and repeals billions of dollars of subsidies for oil companies.
This legislation is a significant first step toward reducing our dependence on fossil fuels, combating global warming and decreasing air pollution, while simultaneously stimulating economic growth, creating thousands of new jobs and saving consumers money on energy bills.
We urge members of the Senate to follow the lead of their colleagues in the House and pass this bill.”
