WASHINGTON, DC - Gene Karpinski, President of the League of Conservation Voters issued the following statement in response to Senator Barack Obama’s speech in Dayton, Ohio.

"Today in Ohio, Senator Obama put forth an inspiring vision to meet the critical challenge of our time:  America's energy future.  His plan will create good jobs and revitalize our sagging economy.

He has shown great leadership at a time when others have fallen for false choices and gimmicks that do not bring relief for consumers in the short term, keep us at the mercy of Big Oil in the long term and threaten dire climatic consequences for our children and grandchildren.

As oilman T. Boone Pickens says, 'this is one problem we can't drill our way out of.'

When it comes to energy policy, Senator Obama offers a change from the tired, old conventional thinking that has led to policy paralysis.  That thinking works for the special interests, not for today's consumers and not for the next generation of Americans."
