WASHINGTON, DC – League of Conservation Voters President Gene Karpinski today applauded the Senate for voting against Senator Lamar Alexander’s proposed amendment to the Senate Budget Bill.

“We applaud the Senate for standing up to the Big Oil and Gas lobbyists and voting against this amendment, which could have threatened America’s public lands and coastlines with hazardous drilling,” Karpinski said.  “This vote was an important opportunity for the Senate to prove its commitment to new sources of clean energy.  Senator Alexander sought to hold our country to the dirty fossil fuels of the past, and we are pleased that a majority of Senators are instead looking forward to a clean energy future.”

“Unfortunately, Senator McCain missed this important vote, as he missed all 15 major environmental votes of 2007.  If the Senator is going to play hooky on every important vote, he should stop trying to campaign as a friend of the environment.”
