WASHINGTON - It’s hard not to get excited about Lieutenant Governor Bill Halter’s campaign for the U.S. Senate. He understands that Washington has not been working for Arkansas families and he is willing to step up and fix it. Bill Halter believes a Senator should serve the people, not special interests, and the League of Conservation Voters could not agree more. That’s why, as we celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day,  we are proudly endorsing Bill Halter for the U.S. Senate.

Without a doubt, Halter is the best candidate for Arkansas when it comes to fixing the failed energy policies of our past. He understands that we need to take control of our energy future in order to curb harmful carbon pollution, enhance our national security, and create a new foundation of economic prosperity. That’s exactly the kind of leadership that Arkansas needs in the U.S. Senate.

Halter recognizes that the most effective way to improve our energy security is by shifting U.S. energy production to cleaner, safer energy, improving the energy efficiency of our buildings and vehicles and forcing corporate polluters to clean up their act. Like the tens of thousands of businesses and workers who are lobbying for a new national energy policy, Halter supports tapping American innovation and ingenuity to help our country lead the world in building a new energy economy.  By investing in the clean energy technologies of the future, we can help put 1.7 million Americans – including 17,000 Arkansas – to work building the homegrown energy sources we need to power our country and cut our dangerous dependence on oil from hostile nations.

Meanwhile, Senator Blanche Lincoln has seemingly forgot that she represents the public interests, not the special interests. She’s taken more than $1 million in campaign cash from Big Oil and other energy interests. And instead of supporting comprehensive energy reform – as she has in the past – she’s now turned her back on Arkansas families who would benefit greatly from the new energy jobs and cleaner air and water that would result from the energy legislation currently before Congress. In fact, Senator Lincoln has co-sponsored Sen. Lisa Murkowski’s recent resolution, largely written by Washington energy lobbyists, that would prevent the EPA from enforcing regulations to reduce harmful pollutants from some of Arkansas’ biggest polluters.

Democratic primary voters in Arkansas are faced with a clear choice. It is a choice between continuing energy policies that favor corporate polluters at the expense of working families and advancing new policies that will lead to a cleaner, safer, more sustainable future for America.  And that’s why Blanche Lincoln tops our list of Dirty Dozen candidates while we proudly stand with Bill Halter for U.S. Senate in 2010.
