WASHINGTON D.C. – The League of Conservation Voters, which works to turn environmental values into national priorities, today announced its endorsement of Representative Patrick Murphy for re-election in Pennsylvania’s 8th congressional district.
“Representative Murphy has been a true leader in moving our country toward a clean energy future,” said LCV President Gene Karpinski. “As a firm supporter of renewable energy, Murphy has worked tirelessly during his first term to end our nation’s dependence on oil and invest in clean energy alternatives.”
“We need to change the way we power our country. Investing in clean, renewable energy is the best long term plan for protecting our environment,” said Congressman Murphy. “I am honored to have the support of the League of Conservation Voters and I will continue to fight for an environmentally sound energy policy that ends our dependence on foreign oil and creates jobs.”
Since Murphy took office in 2007, he has consistently voted pro-environment, earning a lifetime LCV score of 91%. During the 110th congress, Murphy supported bills that increase fuel efficiency standards to 35 miles per gallon by 2020 and that institute a renewable electricity standard of 15% by 2050. He voted to repeal billions in tax breaks to Big Oil, and to use the savings to invest in renewable sources of energy.
As a new member of Congress, Murphy co-sponsored the Safe Climate Act (H.R. 1590), designed to reduce America’s global warming pollution 80% by 2050, as well as the Clean Water Restoration Act (H.R. 2421), which would close loopholes for industrial polluters to dump in America’ waterways. In an effort to help meet the needs of emerging businesses in the alternative energy industry, Murphy introduced and passed a bill that will prepare students for green energy careers by helping technical schools to modernize. In addition, Murphy voted for the Renewable Energy and Job Creation Act to provide tax incentives to encourage the development of renewable energy.
“Patrick Murphy has demonstrated remarkable environmental leadership in his first term,” said Karpinski. “He will continue to fight for a new, clean energy economy that will protect our planet, increase our national security, and create American jobs.”
