WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today the League of Conservation Voters, which works to turn environmental values into national priorities, endorsed Senator Frank Lautenberg (D) for his re-election to the U.S. Senate.  Senator Lautenberg has been a leader on environmental issues in a career in the Senate that has spanned three decades.
“Senator Lautenberg has the second highest LCV lifetime score in the Senate” said LCV President Gene Karpinski.   “His record on the environment with a LCV lifetime score of 96% in our annual National Environmental Scorecard* proves his dedication to protecting New Jersey and the health and safety of all Americans.  Senator Lautenberg is not just someone who votes consistently pro-environment.  He is also a real leader and a champion, and that's the kind of person we need in the Senate."
Lautenberg continues to be a strong proponent of the program that ensures polluters pay for cleanup of their own sites and has fought to ban offshore drilling by oil and gas interests.
Last year, Sen. Lautenberg continued his pro-environment voting on key pieces of energy legislation, including his support for the renewable electricity standard that was ultimately unsuccessful in Senate and stripped from the final bill.  Lautenberg is a long-time supporter of incentives for renewable energy sources.  “This transition to clean renewable energy will not only lead to a healthier environment,” said Sen. Lautenberg, “but also a healthier economy since many of these new technologies will support many more jobs in the United States.”
“I am proud to accept the League of Conservation Voters’ endorsement.  The League of Conservation and I are both committed to changing direction in Washington after an eight year assault on our environment by the Bush-Cheney Republicans.  I am proud to have blocked them from drilling off the Jersey coast and from weakening our state's tough chemical plant safety law.  Together we will continue working to protect our environment, combat global warming and move our country toward clean energy.  The people of New Jersey know they will always have a partnership between the League of Conservation Voters and Senator Lautenberg,” said Sen. Lautenberg
This is the second endorsement for a federal candidate in New Jersey in 2008.  Earlier this year, LCV endorsed Republican Representative Frank Lobiondo.
