WASHINGTON, DC - League of Conservation Voters President Gene Karpinski issued the following statement regarding the House’s  passage of H.R. 5351, the Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation Act of 2008:

“We applaud Speaker Pelosi and the U.S. House of Representatives for standing up to Big Oil and for passing this much-needed bill.  Thanks to the courage of the House leadership, America has taken another significant step towards a clean energy future.”

“This bill rolls back billions of dollars in tax breaks to big oil companies, and reinvests that money into tax credits for wind, solar and other clean, renewable energy sources.  That investment will not only help reduce the carbon emissions that create global warming, it will create thousands of American jobs.  The three year extension on wind energy tax credits alone will create a stable market for wind power that will allow companies across the country to expand their operations.”

“The future of this country is in clean, renewable energy. LCV hopes that the Senate will follow the House’s lead and make that future possible.”
