Washington, DC – In response to President Bush’s statements in today’s press conference, Gene Karpinski, the President of the League of Conservation Voters, which works to turn environmental values into national priorities, issued the following statement:

“After seven years of embracing his friends at Big Oil, the President continues to cling to the outdated policies and energy sources of the past,” Karpinski said.  “If he wants to reduce energy costs for the American people, he should ask BP and Shell to share some of the $14 billion in profits they made in the last three months.  Instead, he’s threatened to veto any bill that deprives them of $18 billion taxpayer dollars over ten years – a drop in the bucket for these massive companies.  If that money were put to work investing in clean, renewable energy sources, we could be the last generation forced to worry about gas prices.”
