In response to Senator Barack Obama’s speech today in Michigan, League of Conservation Voters President Gene Karpinksi issued the following statement:

"We applaud Senator Obama's strong support for tough measures to truly end our dependence on oil and move us towards a new, clean energy future," LCV President Gene Karpinski said.  "His energy plan, the most comprehensive plan ever produced by a Presidential nominee, will cut billions of dollars in subsidies to Big Oil, increase the fuel efficiency of our cars, and require utility companies to produce cleaner energy.  It will create millions of jobs and significantly reduce the threat of global warming. These proposals are also popular with the public, and once we have a new president and more forward-thinking members in the House and Senate, we don't believe we will need a 'compromise' on off-shore drilling, which will be yet another give-away to Big Oil and will provide no relief for hard hit consumers.  We will resist any effort to pay this ransom which George Bush, John McCain and Big Oil are demanding in exchange for the release of real investments in clean, renewable energy."
