WASHINGTON, DC – Responding to the candidates’ answers to Bob Schieffer’s refreshing and timely question on climate change and reducing America’s dependence on oil in tonight’s debate, LCV President Gene Karpinski issued the following statement:

“Looking to the past, Senator McCain clung to President Bush’s false claim that more domestic drilling will relieve our energy problems.  Looking to the future, Senator Obama recognized the incredible potential of clean energy to create millions of jobs and to boost our economy.  He wisely called for a rebirth of the American auto industry as the world’s leading producer of fuel efficient cars.  With both our economy and our planet in danger, now more than ever we need a President who’s looking forward.”
