DENVER, CO - In response to the proposal put forward today by Senator Ken Salazar and Congressman Mark Udall, LCV Senior Vice President Tony Massaro issued the following statement.

“Senator Salazar and Congressman Udall strongly support tough measures to end our dependence on oil and move us towards a new, clean energy future.  The plan they have unveiled today contains concrete steps to help hard hit consumers.  The Salazar/Udall plan will out-perform the ‘Gang of Ten’ proposal because it requires a renewable electricity standard and aggressively increases the fuel efficiency of cars and trucks.

While they have put forward proposals for additional drilling like the Gang of Ten, we cannot drill our way out of this energy crisis.  Oilman T. Boone Pickens concedes this fact and even the Bush Department of Energy has said that additional drilling will not decrease the cost of oil in the short term and will save only pennies per gallon ten or more years down the road.

This plan shows that Congressman Udall and Senator Salazar recognize that clean, renewable energy is the key to a prosperous future.”
