WASHINGTON – Today, the League of Conservation Voters, Sierra Club and Missouri Votes Conservation launched a paid media campaign to call on Senators to vote against Senator Murkowski’s Big Oil Bailout – a resolution to undermine the Clean Air Act that would put public health at risk and jeopardize long-overdue action to hold the biggest polluters accountable for their carbon pollution.
"With record oil profits rolling in and an ongoing oil disaster in the Gulf Coast, it’s appalling that Senator Murkowski and others feel that now is the time for another bailout that protects Big Oil, corporate polluters and lobbyists." said LCV President Gene Karpinski. “We call on Senators to vote no on this ‘Big Oil Bailout’ that would keep the U.S. hooked on oil and protect oil industry profits."
Sen. Murkowski is seeking a vote this week on an amendment to overturn EPA’s scientific finding that carbon pollutants endanger public health and welfare, preventing the EPA from action to reduce this harmful pollution. The resolution was heavily influenced by Washington lobbyists who work for oil-industry funded lobby groups and held senior posts in the Bush administration.
"Last Friday President Obama called for an end to the cozy relationship Big Oil has enjoyed with our government. That can't happen if the Senate bails out Big Oil and Coal and looks the other way when it comes to environmental safeguards," said Michael Brune, Sierra Club Executive Director.
The radio ads will run this week in multiple media markets in five states: Indiana, Virginia, North Dakota, Missouri and Arkansas.
"Instead of this effort to keep us mired in the failed energy policies of the past, Senators must focus on passing comprehensive clean energy and climate legislation that will move us towards a cleaner, more secure energy future," said Liz Forrestal, Executive Director of Missouri Votes Conservation.

ANNCR: When Wall Street fat cats broke our economy, what did Washington give ‘em? A bailout.
And when big banks took too many risks, what’d they get? A bailout.
And when the car companies couldn’t sell any cars? You got it…. Bailout.
Well, now there’s a bill in Washington that would bail out big oil too.
Yep, that’s right – bailouts for Big Oil. They made billions in profits last year and oil’s sliming our Gulf coast right now, wiping out livelihoods for thousands. But Big Oil wants a bailout too.
And their special interest lobbyists actually wrote the bill behind closed doors – to wipe out pollution rules enforcement. So they can pollute our air and water. And get away with it.
Now they’re pressuring our senator to help ram it through Congress.
Call Senator Bayh at 202-224-3121. Tell him to stand up for Indiana families by voting against the Murkowski Amendment. No bailouts for Big Oil. If they break the rules, they should pay the price.
Paid for by League of Conservation Voters.
