WASHINGTON, DC - Senators John Kerry (D-Mass.) and Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) today unveiled details of the American Power Act, comprehensive clean energy and climate legislation that will create jobs, provide greater energy independence and reduce harmful carbon pollution.
LCV President Gene Karpinski released the following statement on the release:
"Today's release of the American Power Act moves the Senate closer to passing a comprehensive climate and energy bill in the next couple of months. We applaud the tireless leadership of Senators Kerry and Lieberman in crafting legislation that curbs dangerous carbon pollution and lays the foundation for a new clean energy economy.
"The American Power Act represents a significant step in the right direction as it establishes mandatory limits on carbon pollution that reduce emissions 17% by 2020 and 80% by 2050. We are also pleased that this legislation makes necessary investments in transportation infrastructure that will reduce oil consumption, strengthen communities, and save consumers money. As the debate moves forward however, we will work with the Senate to ensure that the final bill, among other key provisions, maintains full ability of states and the EPA to control carbon pollution and does not include incentives for new offshore oil drilling.
"The responsibility now shifts to President Obama and Majority Leader Reid to work with senators from both parties to pass a strong, comprehensive clean energy and climate bill this summer that creates new jobs, reduces our dependence on oil and protects the planet for future generations."
