WASHINGTON – The Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Transportation today signed a joint final rule establishing greenhouse gas emission standards and corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) standards for light-duty vehicles for model years 2012-2016. Over the life of the program, these measures are expected to save about 1.8 billion barrels of oil and reduce nearly 1 billion tons of greenhouse gas emissions. League of Conservation Voters President Gene Karpinski issued the following statement:

“We applaud President Obama’s historic steps forward to increase fuel efficiency and curb dangerous greenhouse gas emissions. This action represents an essential step toward meeting the president’s goals of transforming our nation’s energy policies, rebuilding the struggling economy and protecting the planet for future generations.

“The new standards will increase the strength and competitiveness of America’s automakers, save consumers billions in gas money and significantly reduce the amount of pollution our country emits.

“We now look to the Senate to build upon this important step by passing comprehensive clean energy and climate legislation that will create jobs, make America more energy independent and reduce harmful carbon pollution.”
