WASHINGTON — Today, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Department of Transportation (DOT) announced a joint proposal for the first ever fuel efficiency and global warming pollution standards for medium and heavy-duty vehicles sold in the model years 2014 to 2018.

League of Conservation Voters President Gene Karpinski issued the following statement:

"We commend the administration's continued leadership on efforts to increase fuel efficiency and curb global warming pollution. This action represents another important step toward transforming our nation's energy policies, rebuilding our struggling economy and protecting the planet for future generations.

The proposed new standards will reduce our dangerous dependence on oil and curb global warming pollution while creating much-needed jobs and saving billions of dollars. We look forward to working with both the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Transportation to ensure that the final rules are as strong as possible in order to bring about the greatest possible pollution reductions and oil savings."
