WASHINGTON – President Obama today called for comprehensive clean energy and climate legislation during his State of the Union address, citing the greater energy independence and job creation that will result from transitioning to a clean energy economy.
LCV President Gene Karpinski released the following response to President Obama’s remarks:
"We applaud President Obama's continued leadership and urge the Senate to heed his call by swiftly passing comprehensive clean energy and climate legislation that creates clean energy jobs, reduces our dangerous dependence on foreign oil and protects the planet for future generations."
"President Obama's commitment to work with Congress to pass comprehensive clean energy and climate legislation this year should give pause to the obituary writers who pose as political and environmental reporters.
"The fact is that those in Washington who continue to predict the demise of comprehensive clean energy and climate reform, as well as those in Congress who side with Big Oil in opposition to such reform, stand at odds with the American public's desire to build a clean energy economy and curb global warming pollution."
