WASHINGTON – On Tuesday, President Barack Obama used the first primetime Oval Office speech of his presidency to address the ongoing BP disaster in the Gulf and to renew his call for comprehensive energy legislation. During the President’s address he discussed plans to contain the environmental damage and to hold BP accountable, long-term recovery plans for the Gulf coast and stressed the importance of a clean energy future.
LCV President Gene Karpinski released the following statement in response:
“Let the President’s call for action serve as a final warning to wavering Senators that failing to pass comprehensive energy and climate legislation is not an option. It’s time to stand up, vote and be counted. You’re either with the Big Oil companies blocking reform or you’re with the millions of Americans who want a new clean energy future.”
Last week, LCV released a new poll by the Benenson Strategy Group showing overwhelming public support for comprehensive energy legislation that goes beyond simply making BP pay for the damage they’ve done. The poll also found that the oil spill is intensifying the public’s desire for clean energy investments and increased regulation on corporate polluters.
