Today the New York League of Conservation Voters (NYLCV) and the national League of Conservation Voters (LCV), which work to turn environmental values into national priorities, jointly endorsed Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand for reelection in New York’s 20th Congressional District.
“Representative Gillibrand came onto the Congressional scene like a champion,” LCV President Gene Karpinski said. “In her first year, she earned a score of 95%, secured $35,000 for the installation of a solar energy system in Washington County, and voted to end tax breaks for oil and gas companies in order to establish an energy plan based on renewable energies and the creation of clean jobs.”
“Kirsten Gillibrand has proven her mettle on Capitol Hill by fighting for cleaner air, alternative energy and environmental safeguards," said Marcia Bystryn, president of the New York League of Conservation Voters. "Now, we urge voters in the 20th District to return her to Washington for another term, to work toward an energy-independent future that confronts the dangers of climate change while protecting New York's economy and growing jobs."
In the fight for immediate steps to lower the price of gas, Rep. Gillibrand is working to make New York a leader in energy independence, shift U.S. energy policies away from a dependence on oil, create new jobs, increase national security, and protect our natural resources.
“Representative Gillibrand’s plan provides immediate solutions to high gas prices and invests in a new energy future that will ensure long term security for America,” Karpinski said.
Representative Gillibrand’s priorities for energy legislation include cracking down on price gouging in order to immediately bring down high costs, cutting billions of dollars of tax breaks for oil companies and investing in American jobs. She will push for locally grown biofuels as alternatives to gas and corn-ethanol, and provide tax credits for renewable energy, promoting investments and growth in new technologies.
“Representative Gillibrand is committed to combating high gas prices from all sides,” Karpinski concluded. “She will fight back by holding profit making oil companies responsible for the price inflation, giving money back to hard working Americans, and investing in new technologies that will create jobs and lower costs.”
“In order to feel relief from high prices at the pump and secure more jobs in Upstate New York, America needs to move away from its dependence on foreign oil and invest in the ingenuity and hard work of its citizens here,” Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand said. “I am honored by the endorsement from LCV and NYLCV and am excited to advance this country towards a secure and abundant energy future.”
