WASHINGTON - The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) President Deb Callahan today released the following statement regarding the Senate Rules Committee vote on S. 271, the "527 Reform Act of 2005", which passed despite various senators’ objections:

"Today’s Senate Rules Committee outcome - and the arguments that proceeded it - shows the real intention of this bill as a vehicle to stifle the political speech of millions of Americans while empowering corporations, trade associations and leadership PACs, like the ethically challenged House Majority Leader Tom DeLay’s ARMPAC, to coerce employees and throw special interest money at politicians.

Despite the outcome of today’s vote, it’s encouraging that some members of the committee recognize that this measure is seriously flawed. We urge defeat of this bill if it reaches the Senate floor."
