WASHINGTON - The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) and the League of Conservation Voters Education Fund (LCVEF) today unveiled a major campaign, Hands off our Coasts! (www.handsoffourcoasts.com), to protect vulnerable coastal areas in Florida, Virginia, California and elsewhere from big oil.

Emboldened by their push to open drilling sites in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, the Congressional Majority Leadership and its corporate allies have drafted an energy bill which would allow for oil and gas exploration along some of our nation's most beautiful and untouched coasts. While beaches and marine wildlife have been protected for decades by a ban on coastal drilling, lawmakers are now considering legislation that would leave our valuable coasts and oceans vulnerable. Fortunately, a bipartisan group of Senators have stepped up to offer an amendment to prevent invasive activities that could pave the way for drilling off our coasts.

To ensure the protection of our coasts, LCV/LCVEF have launched an integrated effort to educate communities and mobilize grassroots activists to speak out against this aggressive assault. Through personal contact, media outreach, and the unveiling of a new website (www.handsoffourcoasts.com), LCV/LCVEF are committed to raising awareness and promoting nationwide action against this serious threat. By telling Congress and big oil, "Hands off our Coasts!" and urging lawmakers to support the bipartisan amendment, citizens everywhere can defend our natural habitats.
