WASHINGTON, DC – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV), the political voice of the national environmental movement, today announced its endorsement of Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) for reelection to the U.S. Senate, citing her leadership in fighting for Washington families and standing up to corporate polluters and special interests.  LCV also announced its plans to run an independent, grassroots campaign on behalf of Senator Cantwell.  LCV's endorsement of Sen. Cantwell is the organization's first for the 2006 election among Democrats, Republicans and Independents.

"LCV is proud to make its first endorsement of the 2006 election cycle for Senator Maria Cantwell," said LCV President Deb Callahan.  "Senator Cantwell is one of our nation's strongest environmental leaders in Congress, fighting every day for the health, quality of life and pocketbooks of Washington families, willing to stand up to big corporate interests, and working tirelessly to protect our wild places for future generations. In the coming weeks and months, we look forward to mounting an aggressive campaign to help reelect Senator Cantwell to the U.S. Senate."

Ms. Callahan also commented that LCV's particularly early endorsement of Sen. Cantwell is because of her exemplary environmental record and leadership on behalf of Washington families.  Senator Cantwell earned a 100% rating on LCV's 2004 National Environmental Scorecard – one of only two senators who received a perfect score last year.

LCV's independent campaign in support of Senator Cantwell will build toward a multi-county, grassroots effort that will include door-to-door contact, letter writing, online activities, direct mail and other elements.  LCV will be recruiting and mobilizing hundreds of volunteers from local communities throughout the Greater Puget Sound area as part of this effort.

"Day in, day out, Senator Cantwell is on our side, putting the people of Washington first while standing up to the likes of Enron and holding corporate polluters accountable," said LCV Northwest Campaign Manager Mike Palamuso.  "And in a state where elections have been decided by the slimmest of margins, we will be mobilizing grassroots activists to inform voters about Senator Cantwell's record of fighting for Washington families."

Senator Cantwell is a leader in protecting the environment and fighting for Washington state. She has worked to protect consumers, most recently leading a successful effort to stop Enron from suing ratepayers in Snohomish County for payment of electricity the discredited energy company never delivered.  Senator Cantwell has also been outspoken in making sure polluters, not taxpayers, pay for

clean up of toxic waste sites, and co-sponsored legislation to ensure oil and chemical companies maintain their responsibility for cleaning up Superfund sites.  On the critical issue of nuclear waste, she helped extract a pledge from the Department of Energy to clean up waste at the Hanford Site.

Additionally, Senator Cantwell has led the effort in the U.S. Senate to protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from oil drilling.  She continues to work for the creation of the Wild Sky Wilderness and has consistently fought for protection of our wild rivers and roadless areas.
