LCV Statement on House Energy Legislation Committee Markups

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Chuck Porcari, (202) 785-8683; Mark Sokolove, (202) 785-8683 September 28, 2005

WASHINGTON - League of Conservation Voters (LCV) President Deb Callahan today released the following statement as the House Resources and House Energy & Commerce committees marked-up new energy legislation.

"The new energy bills being considered today in the House Resources and Energy & Commerce committees are nothing short of a national disgrace. Both bills are shameful examples of the radical, right-wing using the recent tragedies in the Gulf Coast as an opportunity to gut our environmental protections, and open up more of our coasts to drilling while lining the pockets of an already profitable oil and gas industry.

These are the wrong solutions for our current energy challenges as they fail to permanently protect Americans from energy price spikes or threats to the environment.  The American public has no desire to sacrifice clean air and other public health protections for polluter profits. LCV will make sure members of Congress who vote for this legislation are held accountable."
