WASHINGTON - League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Legislative Director Tiernan Sittenfeld released the following statement today regarding Sen. Ted Stevens's (R-AK) proposal to attach language allowing oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to the Defense Appropriations conference report.

"Sen. Stevens's proposal to attach an Arctic Refuge drilling provision to the Defense Appropriations bill is both desperate and reckless.

"Sen. Stevens is working with his friends in the oil and gas industry - who are already benefiting from billions in giveaways in the new energy law - to hijack major national policy priorities for the sake of greed that knows no bounds.

"The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is a national treasure that must be protected.  For Sen. Stevens to include Arctic drilling in a defense bill that feeds, clothes and arms our troops is simply beyond the pale - even for someone who championed a $223 million bridge to nowhere.

"It's appalling that Sen. Stevens is playing politics with our national defense to tack his pet project to a defense spending bill. We trust that senators from both parties will see through this abuse of the process and quickly put a stop to it."
