LCV Urges the Senate to Reject Sen. Stevens's Arctic Drilling

WASHINGTON - League of Conservation Voters (LCV) President Deb Callahan released the following statement today regarding Sen. Ted Stevens's (R-AK) amendment to the Defense Appropriations conference report allowing for drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

"Sen. Stevens's provision to allow Arctic Refuge drilling in the Defense Appropriations bill is both insidious and reckless.

"Sen. Stevens is working with his friends in the oil and gas industry - who are already benefiting from billions in giveaways in the new energy law - to hijack major national policy priorities for the sake of greed that knows no bounds.

"The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is a national treasure that must be protected.  For Sen. Stevens to include Arctic drilling in a defense bill that feeds, clothes and arms our troops is simply beyond the pale - even for someone who championed a $223 million 'bridge to nowhere.'

"It's appalling that Sen. Stevens is playing politics with our national defense to tack his pet project to a defense spending bill.  Senators should use every means at their disposal to remove Sen. Stevens's Arctic drilling amendment from the Defense bill, up to and including using the filibuster specifically against the Arctic provision."
