TAMPA, FL – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV), the political voice of the national environmental movement, today announced its endorsement of Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL) for re-election to the U.S. Senate, citing his strong and unwavering leadership in fighting to protect Florida's coastlines from offshore drilling and improving the quality of life for Florida families.
LCV also launched an online petition urging the Bush administration to reverse its rule (now on the books) that could move offshore drilling closer to Florida's coast by redrawing state boundaries in the Gulf of Mexico. To sign the petition and learn more about this issue, concerned Floridians can visit http://action.lcv.org/campaign/fl_petition_011306.
"LCV is proud to endorse Bill Nelson for re-election to the U.S. Senate," said LCV Senior Vice President for Political Affairs Tony Massaro. "Senator Nelson is an environmental leader in Congress, fighting every day to protect Florida's beaches and coastal communities from oil drilling and working to improve the health, quality of life and pocketbooks of Floridians. We urge all Florida voters to join us in supporting Senator Nelson's re-election."
Understanding the potential devastation even one oil spill could cause to Florida's environment and tourism-dependent economy, Senator Nelson has been steadfast in his leadership to protect Florida's coasts from expanded drilling. Most recently, he led a bipartisan coalition that successfully blocked attempts through both energy legislation and the federal budget to open the eastern Gulf of Mexico to drilling. Additionally, Senator Nelson continues to pursue the establishment of a permanent ban on drilling in the eastern Gulf.
He is also committed to protecting the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from oil drilling, and has fought successfully to secure funding for Florida conservation projects.
"Senator Nelson is willing to stand up to big oil and work tirelessly across party lines to protect the interests of Floridians -- that is why LCV enthusiastically supports him in his reelection to the U.S. Senate," said LCV FL Campaign Manager Shirin Bidel-Niyat.
