Washington, DC - The League of Conservation Voters (LCV), the independent political voice for the environment, today announced its endorsement of Representative Chris Shays (R-CT) for re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives, citing his strong and unwavering leadership on many environmental issues affecting Connecticut and the nation as a whole.
"LCV is proud to endorse Chris Shays for re-election to Congress," said LCV Senior Vice President for Political Affairs Tony Massaro. "Rep. Shays is an environmental leader who time after time is looking out for the interests of his constituents, not those of corporate polluters and other special interests. We urge all voters in Connecticut's 4th district to return him to Washington for another term."
Among his other accomplishments - including his strong 91% lifetime LCV voting score - Rep. Shays introduced the Energy For Our Future Act at the end of last year. This legislation would help reduce our dangerous dependence on oil while protecting the environment and creating jobs through the sustained development of renewable energy technology.
He is also committed to protecting the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from oil drilling; he has fought for increased fuel efficiency in automobiles and has consistently voted against energy legislation designed to support oil companies already reporting record profits.
As a member and former co-chairman of the Long Island Sound Caucus, Rep. Shays has worked diligently with the entire delegation to protect the Long Island Sound - a source of livelihood, nourishment and recreation for many in Connecticut and elsewhere. He has also tended to local land preservation and open space issues, including helping to secure funding from the Land and Water Conservation Fund to add both the Stratford Great Meadows Salt March and Calves Island in Greenwich to the list of national wildlife refuges.
"Rep. Shays is willing to stand up to the special interests and work tirelessly across party lines to protect the interests of Connecticut families. The U.S. Congress could use a lot more Chris Shays' in its membership," said LCV Eastern Campaign Director Susan Gobreski.
