League of Conservation Voters Statement on Sham Food Safety Bill

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Chuck Porcari, (202) 785-8683; Mark Sokolove, (202) 785-8683 March 9, 2006

WASHINGTON, DC - League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Legislative Director Tiernan Sittenfeld today issued the following statement after the House passed H.R. 4167, the so-called "National Uniformity for Food Act of 2005."

"We are deeply disappointed the House of Representatives passed this sham of a food safety bill.  This legislation undermines public health protections around the country by preempting state laws.

"This bill is yet another example of the anti-environmental leadership in the House of Representatives allowing corporate lobbyists to rewrite our core public health laws behind closed doors without input from the public.  In particular, Rep. Mike Rogers (R-MI) (who earned an abysmal 6% on our 2005 National Environmental Scorecard) failed his constituents and is threatening our nation's food safety by sponsoring this legislation.

"We urge the Senate to reject this massive and dangerous rollback of state and local food safety protections."
