League of Conservation Voters Criticizes Rep. Pombo's Drilling Bill

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Chuck Porcari, (202) 785-8683 May 30, 2006

WASHINGTON, DC - League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Legislative Director Tiernan Sittenfeld today issued the following statement after the House of Representatives approved a bill that would allow oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

"A week after not bothering to cast a vote on an amendment to protect his own state from offshore drilling, Rep. Richard Pombo (CA-11) today sees fit to call for drilling in someone else's state. This bill would threaten a national wildlife refuge while doing absolutely nothing to solve our energy problems. Drilling in the Arctic Refuge would affect gas prices by less than a penny per gallon -- and that 20 years from now.

America cannot drill its way to energy independence, as that is apparently a truth that cannot be drilled into Rep. Pombo's head. Instead of pushing the same backward looking policies that benefit only  oil and gas companies, Congress should pursue sensible, effective solutions to our energy problems, solutions like increasing auto mileage requirements and investment in new clean, safe and reliable energy sources."
