WASHINGTON, DC – League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Legislative Director Tiernan Sittenfeld issued the following statement after Sen. Mel Martinez (R-FL) announced a Senate proposal that could open new tracts of the Gulf of Mexico to drilling:
“Today, Sen. Mel Martinez simply sold out Floridians and their coastline to Big Oil. Instead of using this opportunity to count on American ingenuity, American know-how and the American work ethic to create a new economy based on energy independence, Mr. Martinez chose to look in the rearview mirror. We don’t know how he could like what he saw.
We call on Florida’s senior Senator, Bill Nelson to oppose this bad idea. No matter how much lipstick you put on a pig, it’s still a pig.”
