WASHINGTON, DC - League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Legislative Director Tiernan Sittenfeld issued the following statement after legislation which would have opened up over 8 million acres in the Gulf of Mexico to drilling was pulled from the House suspension calendar, due to an inadequate number of votes for passage:
"This backward looking legislation should never again see the light of day. A month after America voted for a clean energy future, it's time to put an end to the days of kowtowing to the oil industry.
Fortunately, the 110th Congress is set to begin charting a new course on energy policy, starting with the repeal of taxpayer subsidies to Big Oil during the first 100 legislative hours."
The nonprofit League of Conservation Voters (LCV) is the independent political voice for the environment. LCV, a non-partisan organization, is working to advocate for sound environmental policies and to elect pro-environment candidates who will adopt and implement such policies.
