WASHINGTON, DC – League of Conservation Voters (LCV) President Gene Karpinski issued the following statement in reaction to Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, and House Administration Chairwoman Juanita Millender-McDonald’s “Green the Capitol Initiative”:

We applaud Speaker Pelosi, Majority Leader Hoyer and Chairwoman Juanita Millender-McDonald’s efforts to “green” the Capitol complex.  This initiative is yet another example of the new House Leadership’s commitment to tackling global warming, one of the most pressing problems of our time.

By investing in renewable energy and offsetting carbon emissions, the House Leadership is investing in sound energy policy that will save taxpayers money in the long run while reducing global warming pollution.

The leadership of Congress will help encourage the American people to act – and this historic initiative will symbolically and literally place our nation’s Capitol complex at the forefront of efforts to curb global warming.

The “Green the Capitol Initiative” contains many important steps, including investing in 100 percent renewable electricity and placing the Capitol on track to be carbon-neutral by the end of the 110th Congress.

We look forward to working with Congress to further address global warming and bring about a clean energy future.
