League of Conservation Voters (LCV) President Gene Karpinski issued the following statement after NASA Administrator Michael Griffin stated during an interview with NPR that he is not convinced that global warming is "a problem we must wrestle with":

"Michael Griffin's statement that he cannot say whether global warming is a long term concern is deeply troubling.

"Global warming is happening, humans are contributing to the problem and we must take action to cut emissions of greenhouse gases that cause it -- this is not rocket science."

"To suggest that global warming could be beneficial, on the heels of a landmark report by the world's most renowned climate scientists outlining catastrophic consequences, is not only ignorant but dangerous."

"His comments have been called 'remarkably uninformed' by Jim Hansen, a NASA scientist responsible for the research that has demonstrated the potential for disaster global warming poses.  And another leading climate scientist
has called for his resignation.  After hearing this stunning display of ignorance of his own agency's research and the threat global warming presents, we have reached the same conclusion."
