League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Senior Vice President for Political Affairs Tony Massaro issued the following statement after Michigan Congressman Tim Walberg called for drilling under the Great Lakes:

"Instead of working to address global warming by investing in clean renewable energy, Rep. Tim Walberg this week called for oil drilling under the Great Lakes

Preserving and protecting the Great Lakes' is critical to keeping this region's economy healthy.  We need to act as stewards of one of our great natural treasures - not jeopardize it by prolonging our addiction to oil.

We can improve our economy and create jobs by investing in America's technological know-how to create clean, alternative energy.

Rep. Walberg's proposal would risk taking the "Great" out of our lakes.  We hope he will reconsider his ill-conceived position."
