Washington, DC - In a stunning display of kitchen wizardry, Director of Individual Giving Susan Zapf took home the first annual League of Conservation Voters Chilli Championship on Nov. 2.
"I was listening to the Dropkick Murphys while cooking," Zapf said. "That's the secret."
It's a big week for Zapf -- on Sunday, her beloved Boston Red Sox won their second World Series in four years, besting the upstart Colorado Rockies in a four-game sweep. Her champion-caliber chili proved to be the perfect compliment to winning baseball.
Entries were judged on overall flavor, pepper content and consistency. Zapf's chili had the best combination of all three, beating out a tasty entry from Patrick Collins and a meatless variety entered by Mike Palamuso.
