Senate defeats move to limit roads in Tongass

Alaska's Tongass National Forest was at one point center stage Wednesday, as the U.S. Senate said "no" to limiting Tongass road-building. By a vote of 39 to 59, senators voted down a measure that would have prohibited federal funds from being used to build new Tongass logging roads.

Alaska's senators both fought against the measure.

Supporters of the measure say taxpayer money is being wasted on the Tongass. The Alaska Rainforest Campaign says in 2004, the U.S. Forest Service spent close to $50 million on the Tongass' logging program and received only $800,000 in return.
