Bingaman Leads Senate Towards Modern Mining Law

In response to Senator Jeff Bingaman’s introduction of S. 796, the Hardrock Mining and Reclamation Act of 2009, League of Conservation Voters Legislative Representative Hasan Nazar issued the following statement:

“Joining Congressman Rahall’s campaign to update the archaic and dangerous General Mining Law of 1872, Senator Bingaman showed great leadership in introducing this bill in the Senate and making it a priority for the Energy and Natural Resources Committee to pass it in the coming months.

“Not only will it protect our land and water for future generations, Senator Bingaman’s bill will create good jobs cleaning up the dirty legacy of 137 years under the old law. We encourage Congress to pass updated mining legislation and to ensure that America’s mining communities are protected by a thoughtful, modern legal structure.”
