SalazarÆs Leadership on Water Issues, Sound Energy Policy Will Make Him An Important Voice in Congress

WASHINGTON - The League of Conservation Voters (LCV), the political voice of the national environmental and conservation community, today announced its endorsement of state Representative John Salazar in the Democratic primary contest for ColoradoÆs 3rd Congressional district.

"As a lifelong farmer and rancher from the San Luis Valley, John Salazar understands the importance of balancing preservation and land use so that our children and their children get to enjoy the wild places that we cherish," said Betsy Loyless, LCV Vice President for Policy. "In addition, JohnÆs record and leadership in the state legislature of fighting for clean and usable water, and promoting renewable sources of energy will make him an important voice for conservation and environmental protection in the U.S. House of Representatives."

In the Colorado House of Representatives, Salazar has sponsored and cosponsored many pieces of legislation concerning water issues. In particular, he led a bipartisan coalition of legislators, environmental groups and Western Slope residents last year in the defeat of "Referendum A," a ballot measure which would have diverted vital water resources away from agricultural and recreational uses in rural Colorado.

Salazar has also been a strong proponent of developing renewable energy sources such as wind, solar and biomass, and has cosponsored legislation to do so in the state legislature. If elected to Congress, Salazar has said that he would continue to push for more investments in renewables as a key way to stimulate economic growth in the 3rd Congressional district, while encouraging farmers to stay on their land and decrease our reliance on foreign sources of energy.

Salazar earned a solid 82% on the 2003 Colorado LCV Scorecard.
