WASHINGTON - The League of Conservation Voters (LCV), the political voice of the national environmental and conservation community, today announced its endorsement of Rep. Barbara Lee (D) for reelection in California³ 9th Congressional district.

"LCV endorsed Rep. Lee because she continues be an outspoken leader for environmental protection on behalf of Oakland, Berkeley and indeed all American families," said Betsy Loyless, LCV Vice President for Policy. "She has been at the forefront in the fight against the Bush Administration and House Republican Leadership³ anti-environmental agenda, and a strong proponent of clean, renewable sources of energy."

During the House debate of the Bush Administration's energy bill, Rep. Lee supported legislation that would substantially increase investments in renewable energy and energy efficiency, fought to protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from oil drilling, and opposed billions of dollars in tax breaks for the coal, oil, and nuclear industries.

Earlier this year, she spoke strongly in support of the environment when she referred to the Bush-Cheney 2005 Budget as a "natural disaster" given that it would cut 6% from environmental programs and 7.2% from the Environmental Protection Agency.

Rep. Lee has an outstanding 98% lifetime LCV score and earned a near-perfect 95% in 2003. Rep. Lee, who is the Congressional Black Caucus Whip, has the highest lifetime LCV score among the entire caucus. Last year, she sponsored a number of nationally significant pieces of environmental legislation.
