WASHINGTON - The League of Conservation Voters (LCV), the political voice of the national environmental and conservation community, today announced its endorsement of Rep. Ra·l M. Grijalva (D-AZ) for reelection in Arizona's 7th Congressional district.

"LCV endorsed Ra·l Grijalva because as a freshmen he has already established an impressive record on environmental protection," said Betsy Loyless, LCV Vice President for Policy. "He voted to stop the push to drill for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, and spoke in opposition to the Healthy Forests Restoration Act, the legislative counterpart to the Bush Healthy Forests Initiative.  He also actively opposed a rider to the Department of Defense Appropriations bill that would have exempted Arizona's Fort Huachuca from responsibility for off base ground water pumping."

In addition to fighting the Bush Administration and anti-environmental Republican initiatives, Rep. Grijalva sponsored proactive legislation to improve our environment.  Last year, Rep. Grijalva sponsored legislation that will help solve a long-standing conflict of grazing on public lands.  His bill, which would compensate public lands ranchers for voluntary and permanent removal of livestock, would reap fiscal and environmental benefits for public lands, and American taxpayers.

Because of his consistent advocacy on conservation issues, Rep. Grijalva earned a perfect 100 percent rating on LCV's 2003 National Environmental Scorecard.
