League of Conservation Voters Applauds Clinton Energy Plan
WASHINGTON, DC - League of Conservation Voters (LCV) President Gene Karpinski issued the following statement in reaction to the release of Senator Hillary Clinton's energy plan:
"Senator Clinton's plan offers what this country has lacked over the past seven years: leadership toward a clean, renewable energy future and reduced greenhouse gas pollution.
"The Clinton energy plan includes a mandatory cap-and-trade program to provide incentives to cut production of carbon dioxide and other pollutants that cause global warming. Importantly, credits for this cap-and-trade regime will not be given away to polluters. Rather, all credits will be auctioned and the revenues will used to help consumers with energy bills and invested in job-creating, clean energy industries. The plan will create 5 million new green collar jobs.
"Other highlights of the proposal include an 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and 15% reduction by 2020; CAFE standards will be raised to 40 miles per gallon by 2020 and 55 mpg by 2030; and a standard of 25% of electricity production from renewable sources of energy.
"Senator Clinton understands that next president will need to address global warming and America's energy future because these issues are vital to our economic and national security interests. Her plan offers an exciting blueprint for new leadership."
