League of Conservation Voters Statement in Support of Markey-Platts Fuel Economy Bill
League of Conservation Voters (LCV) President Gene Karpinski issued the following statement in reaction to the bipartisan Markey-Platts legislation introduced today to significantly increase fuel economy standards for cars and light trucks:
"We applaud Representatives Markey and Platts for their leadership in working to increase fuel economy standards and help address global warming.
This is a win-win proposal: not only will it save consumers money by making their cars go further on a gallon of gas, but it will also significantly reduce global warming pollution and our dependence on oil.
Last November, voters sent Washington a clear message for change. Part of that change was a new direction in our nation's energy policy. By increasing fuel economy, this legislation is an important step toward energy independence and a clean energy future.
We look forward to working with Representatives Markey and Platts to help pass this bill."
