Secretary Salazar Takes Interior in New Direction on Offshore Energy Development

WASHINGTON, DC - Responding to Secretary Salazar’s announcement that the Department of the Interior will reexamine the Bush Administration’s five-year plan to open America’s coasts to offshore drilling, League of Conservation Voters Senior Vice President for Political Affairs and Public Education Tony Massaro issued the following statement:

“As expected, Secretary Salazar brought a new commitment to sound science to the Department of the Interior.  Ignoring scientific warning signs at every stage, the Bush Administration put this country on a one-way street toward environmental disaster, giving the big oil companies free reign to endanger our nation’s coasts.  Salazar’s plan will take a different road, giving clean energy companies and taxpaying Americans a chance to stand up for the health and safety of our country’s resources.”
