epa logoResponsible for keeping the American public and the nation's environment safe from the effects of pollution, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA):      

  • Enforces environmental regulations, including the Clean Air and Water Acts,
  • Regulates vehicle emission and other air pollution standards,
  • Oversees the Superfund program that cleans up sites polluted by toxins,
  • Manages waste disposal, and
  • Provides grants to states to improve their water infrastructure.

Stephen JohnsonStephen L. Johnson became Acting Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on January 26, 2005 and was later confirmed by the Senate.  Johnson has spent the past 24 years at EPA, most recently serving as the EPA's Deputy Administrator.  Among his numerous EPA positions, Johnson was the Assistant Administrator of EPA's Office of Prevention, Pesticides, and Toxic Substances and Deputy Director of the Office of Pesticide Programs.
