House Energy and Commerce Committee:
Environment and Hazardous Materials Subcommittee

The Subcommittee on Environment & Hazardous Materials covers a wide range of environmental protection issues such as safe drinking water quality, risk assessment matters and noise pollution. Also falling under the Subcommittee's jurisdiction are laws governing solid waste, hazardous waste and toxic substances including RCRA and Superfund, and mining, oil, gas and coal combustion wastes. Some issues the Subcommittee on Environment & Hazardous Materials has addressed recently include MTBE contamination in groundwater and the effectiveness of underground storage tank cleanup programs.

Paul Gillmor (R-OH 05) chairs the Subcommittee on Environment & Hazardous Materials. He has represented Ohio's 5th District since 1988 and before that he was an Ohio State Senator for 22 years. Congressman Gillmor supported H.R. 6, President Bush's harmful Energy Policy Act of 2003, and voted against proposals in 2001 to increase fuel economy and energy efficiency. His voting record has been consistently dismal.  Gillmor's LCV score in 2003 was 15% and 14% for the entire 107th Congress.

After serving seven years in the California Assembly and State Senate, Rep. Solis was elected to the House of Representatives in 2000 to represent California's 32nd District. In her short time as a Congresswoman, Hilda Solis has garnered LCV scores of 100% for both 2003 and the entire 107th Congress. Her record includes votes in favor of a safer standard for arsenic in drinking water and tougher protections against hard rock mining waste, which has polluted approximately 40% of Western watersheds. She also led the fight to force companies to pay millions in damages for the pollution they caused at four San Gabriel Valley toxic waste sites.
